Ashley and Andy McMakin, both Culverhouse graduates, started Ashley Mac’s Kitchen as a hobby while working in marketing and accounting. Initially a catering kitchen in Bluff Park, it evolved into a restaurant due to public demand. Their first official restaurant opened in Cahaba Heights in 2010 — they now have five locations around the Birmingham metro area.
The McMakins prioritize people over business, investing in employees and offering second chances. “Even to this day, our core framework is built around our employees and it’s to improve their lives,” Ashley said. “We are a very employee-centric company and just want to give people opportunities.”
Ashley recently published a cookbook, “Ashley Mac’s Kitchen,” featuring over 100 recipes.
